Mike Carey, longtime NFL referee, avoided Washington’s games because of the name - The Washington Post

Mike Carey, longtime NFL referee, avoided Washington’s games because of the name - The Washington Post: "No one approached. His secret of almost eight years was safe, if for just a few more minutes.

“I’ve called them Washington all my life,” he said, when finally asked. “And I will continue to call them Washington.”

Unbeknownst to that studio full of cameras, media, analysts, play-by-play men and network executives, Carey’s feelings on the issue were established long before CBS sports chairman Sean McManus admirably gave his on-air talent the choice this year during NFL broadcasts of whether to use the team’s name — which in parts of desensitized Washington is akin to “Lions” or “Broncos” yet is a dictionary-defined racial slur, degrading tens of thousands of Native Americans now being spoken for and heard from for the first time in decades."

Mr. Vacca – bad decision!

But on Monday, one family’s adventure went horribly wrong. A 9-year-old girl from New Jersey accidentally shot and killed her instructor with an Uzi submachine gun while he stood to her left side, trying to guide her. A video of the shooting, which her parents recorded on a cellphone, suggests that the girl, in pink shorts and with a braided ponytail, was unable to control the gun’s recoil; the instructor, Charles Vacca, 39, was rushed to a hospital in Las Vegas, where he died Monday night.

Darren Wilson’s first job was on a troubled police force disbanded by authorities - The Washington Post

Darren Wilson’s first job was on a troubled police force disbanded by authorities - The Washington Post: "The small city of Jennings, Mo., had a police department so troubled, and with so much tension between white officers and black residents, that the city council finally decided to disband it. Everyone in the Jennings police department was fired. New officers were brought in to create a credible department from scratch.

That was three years ago. One of the officers who worked in that department, and lost his job along with everyone else, was a young man named Darren Wilson.

Some of the Jennings officers reapplied for their jobs, but Wilson got a job in the police department in the nearby city of Ferguson."

"Blacks represent 13% of the population but commit 50% of the murders; 90% of black victims are murdered by other blacks," writes Time's Joe Klein, calling for "provocative" thinking on race in America. "The facts suggest that history is not enough to explain this social disaster."

Yet the disturbing truth, according to the FBI's most recent homicide statistics, is that the United States is in the wake of an epidemic of white-on-white crime. Back in 2011, the most recent year for which data is available, a staggering 83 percent of white murder victims were killed by fellow Caucasians.

The mystery of the falling teen birth rate - Vox

The mystery of the falling teen birth rate - Vox: "eenWise's calculations turned out to be accurate. Minnesota's teen birth rate fell by 10.5 percent in 2010. That same year, the national teen birth rate fell by 9.2 percent. That was one of the fastest annual declines on record until 2013, when the rate declined another 10 percent.

For five years now, America's teen birth rate has plummeted at an unprecedented rate, falling faster and faster. Between 2007 and 2013, the number of babies born to teens annually fell by 38.4 percent, according to research firm Demographics Intelligence. This drop occurred in tandem with steep declines in the abortion rate. That suggests that the drop isn't the product of more teenagers terminating pregnancies. More simply, fewer girls are getting pregnant."

Missouri Cops’ License to Kill - The Daily Beast

There is a history of bad policing!
Missouri Cops’ License to Kill - The Daily Beast: "This other Michael Brown was 23 years old and riding with four friends in a pickup truck driven by 22-year-old Tyler Teasley when a sheriff’s deputy clocked them going well over the 55 mph speed limit. Deputy Nic Forler sought to pull them over, and Teasley tried to elude him by pulling into a driveway and shutting off the truck’s lights.

In his panic, Teasley apparently left the truck in neutral and it began to roll toward Forler down a slope of just 2.1 degrees as he approached. Forler fired repeatedly through the tinted back window, missing three of the occupants, but striking Brown and Teasley in the heads, killing them.

The shooting was not initially found justified and in civil court, Brown’s family subsequently won a $1.2 million settlement. Teasley’s family won $1.1 million at trial.

But after Forler was indicted on manslaughter charges, he was found not guilty in criminal court even though the truck was estimated by the FBI to have been rolling toward him at no more than 3.5 mph."

The Michael Brown shooting shows why police should have to wear cameras - Vox: "If police officers were required to wear body cameras, questions about their conduct — like the ones that have arisen in the wake of  the Michael Brown shooting — could be avoided.

The devices are small cameras that can be attached to a police officer's uniform or sunglasses or worn as a headset. Such a camera could have fully captured the entire confrontation between Brown, an 18-year-old black man who was unarmed at the time of the shooting, and Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson.

But without the cameras, the public is left with conflicting accounts from police and eyewitnesses about what, exactly, happened. Police insist Brown physically assaulted Wilson and tried to grab the officer's gun prior to the shooting, while eyewitnesses say Brown didn't assault the cop and was actually trying to surrender before he was shot and killed."

The US Economic Outlook Stinks Because We're Using An Obsolete Definition Of 'Working Age Adults'

Much of the pessimism about future growth stems from the aging of the U.S. population: the baby boomers, the largest generation in American history, are beginning to retire, leading to much lower labor force participation rates among adults, a trend that began even before the Great Recession and has accelerated since:

Credit Suisse labor force participation rate

Credit Suisse

Credit Suisse suggests a different way of looking at this situation. They point out that the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that there will be increasing numbers of older Americans continuing to work past traditional retirement ages.

This chart indicates that older Americans will be more willing to work through their sixties and into their seventies in 2022 than in 2012:

credit suisse older americans labor force participation

Credit Suisse argues that this change in the behavior of older Americans, and the increased desire of younger Americans to go to college, means that our current definition of "working age adults" is obsolete. If we change our definition of working age adults from the current standard of people between the ages of 15 and 64 to people between 20 and 69, growth rates in the working age population suddenly become far more promising over the rest of this decade:

Twenty-four percent of all owners reported job openings they could not fill in the current period, down 2 points, but a solid reading. Fifteen percent reported using temporary workers, up a point. Job creation plans continued to strengthen and rose 1 percentage point to a seasonally adjusted net 13 percent, the best reading since September 2007. When is it legal for a cop to shoot you? - Vox

When is it legal for a cop to shoot you? - Vox: "In the 1980s, a pair of Supreme Court decisions set up a framework for determining when deadly force by cops is reasonable. Those decisions have governed how state laws are applied. Furthermore, many agencies simply use identical standards to the Supreme Court's for their own use-of-force policies — though some departments don't let officers use deadly force even when the Court decisions say they'd be allowed to.

Constitutionally, "police officers are allowed to shoot under two circumstances," says Klinger. The first circumstance is "to protect their life or the life of another innocent party" — what departments call the "defense-of-life" standard. The second circumstance is to prevent a suspect from escaping, but only if the officer has probable cause to think the suspect's committed a serious violent felony."

Bush didn't know anything about Maliki, but put him in charge of Iraq anyway - Vox

That's right!
Bush didn't know anything about Maliki, but put him in charge of Iraq anyway - Vox: "Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has just lost the support of his party, and looks like he will soon be pushed out of office, barring a coup or wildly implausible political turnaround. Maliki's eight years in office have been a disaster for Iraq — his increasingly authoritarian rule and oppression of Iraq's Sunni minority bears no small amount of responsibility for the current Islamic State (ISIS) crisis, which is part of why the US and many others are pushing for him to go.

So maybe now's a good time to remember that the US put him in power in the first place.

An April 2014 piece in The New Yorker, by Dexter Filkins, lays the story out in all of its sordid details.
