Who Created the Voter-Fraud Myth? : The New Yorker

Who Created the Voter-Fraud Myth? : The New Yorker: "Republicans who support tighter voter security say that they are not seeking political advantage. But last summer Pennsylvania’s Republican House Leader, Mike Turzai, was caught on tape boasting to colleagues that the state’s new I.D. law was “going to allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania.” Earlier this month, a state judge suspended the controversial law’s implementation until after the 2012 election; a federal court has done the same with South Carolina’s new I.D. law."

National Guard soldiers and airmen face unemployment crisis - latimes.com

National Guard soldiers and airmen face unemployment crisis - latimes.com: "The Obama administration has helped reduce the unemployment rate for all recent veterans, from 15% nearly two years ago to 10% last month, by developing online tools to help returning troops find jobs, working with employers to increase recruitment and retention, and signing into law tax credits for hiring veterans.

But the rate remains stubbornly high for National Guard members and military reservists. Some employers are reluctant to hire them because, unlike other veterans joining the civilian workforce, they can be called up again."

Christie pegs New Jersey's Sandy damage at $29.4 billion

Now that's a big ask!!  In my assessment: Oh, now they get it!  If more people were displaced (like if a major disaster happened in Virginia) and their bank account disappeared with replacing destroyed items, and their insurance companies bailed out on those policies, maybe people would appreciate FEMA, and Federal assistance funds.

Christie pegs New Jersey's Sandy damage at $29.4 billion:

"This preliminary number is based on the best available data, field observations, and geographical mapping," Christie said in a statement released Friday evening. "I will spare no effort and waste no time to rebuild and restore our tourism industry, our transportation and utilities infrastructure, and the lives of our citizens for the long term."
The estimate is considered a crucial step for Christie, who recently consulted with governors from Louisiana and Mississippi about working with the federal government after Hurricane Katrina, as he makes his case for federal funds to aid in rebuilding New Jersey's storm-ravaged coastline and cover losses incurred during widespread power outages.
How much of that money New Jersey will see is hotly debated. Republican Rep. Chris Smith warned this week that while the maximum federal assistance for an individual is $31,900, the average following last year's Hurricane Irene was $8,000.

The GOP’s Absurd Attack on Susan Rice Over Benghazi - The Daily Beast

I am sure everyone noticed the what Tomasky postulating.  Yes, it's evident that there is a list of personnel who happen to be targets.

The GOP’s Absurd Attack on Susan Rice Over Benghazi - The Daily Beast: "“We all have varying policy views, but the president, in my view, has a clear right to put into place the team he believes will serve him best.”

Yep, that was McCain speaking in behalf of Condi Rice’s nomination. She was confirmed 85-13. At the time, 13 against was considered a lot, and Republicans groused about that. If McCain wants to round up 12 colleagues to cast no votes as an act of symbolism, fine. Tit for tat. But are they really considering filibustering the president’s choice to be the nation’s leading diplomat? That would constitute, among other things, an interesting form of minority outreach from the party that now says it’s so serious about winning over people of color. That party’s only two targets right now are Rice and Attorney General Eric Holder. Gee, what might they have in common, d’you think?"

Police officer quits after comments about Obama - POLITICO.com Print View

Police officer quits after comments about Obama - POLITICO.com Print View: "A Jacksonville police officer has quit after admitting he told colleagues that he would volunteer to assassinate President Barack Obama.

Sam Koivisto told the Florida Times-Union on Wednesday that his comments had been blown out of proportion and that he'd planned to retire in five months anyway.

The 57-year-old retired earlier this month while facing an internal investigation into his comments to other officers after the election. He told them that if an order came to kill Obama, he "wouldn't mind being the guy."           "

“West,” Klein said, “beat himself.”

Those close to West also said Obama’s surprisingly strong performance in South Florida helped to put Murphy over the top. Few of the congressman’s advisers anticipated that Obama, who won more than 50 percent of the vote in two of the three counties that comprise the 18th Congressional District, would have a turnout operation so superior to Romney’s. Obama’s power was particularly pronounced in St. Lucie County, where the president won 53 percent of the vote and Murphy trounced West."

Drudge Is Massacring Chris Christie

Not everyone liked New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live last night.

The splash on The Drudge Report tonight — which calls Christie a "clown" for the appearance — serves as another example of Christie's downgraded standing with conservatives after he welcomed President Barack Obama to tour Superstorm Sandy damage in the final week of the election.

It's safe to say that this probably wouldn't have happened pre-Sandy. And as part of a larger trend, it perhaps doesn't bold well for any future national aspirations Christie might have had.

Ben White: The Fiscal Cliff Is Already Over - Business Insider: "We’ve said it before but it bears repeating: there seems little chance the cliff battle will go near or past the December 31 deadline. Nearly every signal from Republicans suggests they understand they have lost the war over taxes going up on the wealthiest Americans and are just trying to figure out how to get the least objectionable deal that includes real spending cuts and a trigger for tax and entitlement reform. It’s clear from polling that the GOP will get the blame if taxes go up on everyone on Jan. 1 and any subsequent damage to the economy and markets will fall squarely at the party’s feet. "

An Outgunned Hamas Tries to Tap Islamists’ Growing Clout

This is going to get stupid really fast unless this is quashed!  President Obama’s blind support doesn’t help the issue!

Representatives of both Hamas and Israel held separate meetings with leaders in Egypt Sunday after an Israeli bomb killed 11 people in Gaza earlier in the day. Seventy Palestinians have been killed since Wednesday, including 20 children, pushing Hamas toward its newly Islamist neighbors, like Egypt, for support. Hamas officials say there’s only one condition that will put an end to the string of rocket attacks on Israel: an overthrow of the blockade of the Gaza territory that would allow for free movement of people and goods in and out of Gaza along with a guarantee that Israel will stop all attacks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has threatened to "significantly expand" military operations.

Arizona gun dealer tells Obama voters, 'Turn around and leave!'

Cope Reynolds, proprietor at Southwest Shooting Authority in Pinetop, Ariz., told Examiner Friday that he is absolutely serious and he does not care if it upsets some people. His approach is visceral. It made headlines onAmmoLand and The Gun Wire, and it is garnering support from gun rights activists, as can be seen in the comments below.

“I’ve been trying to wake people up,” he lamented.

Reynolds’ approach is like a bucket of ice water, rather than a diplomatic nudge, however. The sign posted in the door of his shop says it all:

Arizona gun store ad: Obama voters 'Not Welcome'

Supporters of President Barack Obama aren't welcome at the Southwest Shooting Authority, a gun store in Pinetop, Ariz. which took out an ad in the newspaper to protest Obama's reelection.

The ad, published in the White Mountain Independent on Nov. 9, reads, "If you voted for Barack Obama, your business is NOT WELCOME at Southwest Shooting Authority. You have proven you are not responsible enough to own a firearm."

Store owner Cope Reynolds told The Huffington Post in a telephone interview Friday that the ad, which cost roughly $250, has "little to do with gun control."

Our country is in dire straits and we desperately need bipartisanship in Congress if we are going to overcome our third world economy and its deficit. THIS IS WHAT MATTERS MOST! Susana Martinez criticizes Mitt Romney comments, maps way forward - James Hohmann - POLITICO.com:

“We have to start electing people who look like their communities all the way from city council to county commissioners to county clerks all the way through the state and up into national politics,” she told POLITICO and Yahoo News at the conclusion of the Republican Governors Association meeting here.

“We need to embrace them not just at election time,” she added. “We visit them, and they don’t appreciate that. And I don’t blame them for not appreciating that. We should not visit them when we need their vote and then walk away. And then four years go by and we go visit them again. We have to make them part of the solution, and the way you do that is by listening to them.”

She expressed disdain for Romney’s claim this week on a conference call that Obama won reelection because he offered “gifts” to minorities and younger voters.
“That unfortunately is what sets us back as a party — our comments that are not thought through carefully,” she said.

Tim Pawlenty on Mitt Romney 'gifts': They didn’t elect Obama - MJ Lee - POLITICO.com:
Tim Pawlenty on Friday disputed Mitt Romney’s controversial remarks claiming that President Barack Obama won reelection by handing out “gifts” to his core constituencies, saying in an interview that American voters do not have the mentality of, “I’m going to vote because of gifts.”

“I think President Obama, first of all, just tactically did a better job getting out the vote in his campaign. But number two, he, at least at the margins, was better able to connect with people in this campaign,” Pawlenty said in an interview with C-SPAN’s “Newsmakers” program scheduled to air on Sunday.

“But I don’t think it’s a matter of people looking at the election and saying, ‘I’m going to vote because of gifts,’” he added. “I think they looked at it and said which one of these candidates would they prefer because of leadership considerations and also can understand their needs the best.”

Americans should be able to direct where their funds are spent.  After NY, and NJ residents go through this they'll heretofore see the need for funds to go to FEMA, and the relief management bodies.  They will surely direct their funds to FEMA instead of building another Submarine and Aircraft Carrier in VA, RI, or Bama.

John Metz, Denny's Franchisee And Hurricane Grill & Wings Owner, Imposes Surcharge For Obamacare

This is actually a really good idea.  It allows customers to pay the surcharge or not frequent the restaurants.  I would not go to those places because his politics shouldn't be part of his business.  But since it is, I would vote with my feet.  Again, the surcharge is a good idea.  It forces the customer to think about the server receiving or not receiving healthcare.  'there is a person behind that tray

John Metz, Denny's Franchisee And Hurricane Grill & Wings Owner, Imposes Surcharge For Obamacare: "While some business owners threaten to cut workers' hours to avoid paying for their health care, a West Palm Beach, Fla., restaurant owner is going even further. John Metz said he will add a 5 percent surcharge to customers' bills to offset what he said are the increased costs of Obamacare, along with reducing his employees' hours.

"If I leave the prices the same, but say on the menu that there is a 5 percent surcharge for Obamacare, customers have two choices. They can either pay it and tip 15 or 20 percent, or if they really feel so inclined, they can reduce the amount of tip they give to the server, who is the primary beneficiary of Obamacare," Metz told The Huffington Post. "Although it may sound terrible that I'm doing this, it's the only alternative. I've got to pass the cost on to the consumer.""

Dana Milbank: The Confederacy of Takers - The Washington Post

Good stuff!!  Please go, please!!
Dana Milbank: The Confederacy of Takers - The Washington Post:

Red states receive, on average, far more from the federal government in expenditures than they pay in taxes. The balance is the opposite in blue states. The secession petitions, therefore, give the opportunity to create what would be, in a fiscal sense, a far more perfect union.
Among those states with large numbers of petitioners asking out: Louisiana (more than 28,000 signatures at midday Tuesday), which gets about $1.45 in federal largess for every $1 it pays in taxes;Alabama (more than 20,000 signatures), which takes $1.71 for every $1 it puts in; South Carolina (26,000), which takes $1.38 for its dollar; and Missouri (22,000), which takes $1.29 for its dollar.
Since the effort gained attention this week, copycats in all but a few states have joined the petition drive. To be fair, White House officials could refuse the secession petitions of states Obama won, such as New York (which gets only 79 cents on its tax dollar), Michigan (85 cents) and Colorado (79 cents).
What would be left is a Confederacy of Takers, including relatively poor states such as Alaska, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi. One of the few would-be Confederacy members that pays more than it receives is Texas, which because of oil money is roughly break-even at 94 cents of benefits for its tax dollar. (The statistics, from an analysis of tax and revenue data by the nonpartisan Tax Foundation, were published in 2006, but the broad pattern doesn’t vary much over time.)
Depending on how aggressive a fiscal hawk he wishes to be, Obama could also try to offload onto the Confederacy of the Takers North and South Dakota and Montana ($1.73, $1.49 and $1.58 in benefits, respectively), but this would probably only work if Canada agreed to allow overflight rights for American aircraft to reach the West Coast states of Washington, Oregon and California (88 cents, 97 cents and 79 cents on their tax dollars, respectively).

Romney Co-Chair: Romney Would Have 'Absolutely' Won Wisconsin With Voter ID Law | ThinkProgress

Sad!
Romney Co-Chair: Romney Would Have 'Absolutely' Won Wisconsin With Voter ID Law | ThinkProgress: "HOST: Do you think photo ID would have made any difference in the outcome of this election?
DARLING: Absolutely, I think so. We’re looking at all different kinds of precincts and all sorts of same-day registrations and I know people will go “oh, we don’t have fraud and abuse in our elections,” but what can’t we have voter ID when the majority of the people in Wisconsin wanted it. We passed it. The governor signed it. Why should one judge in Dane County be able to hold it up?"

GOP Immigration Reform - Business Insider

GOP Immigration Reform - Business Insider: "However, even a comprehensive immigration reform package may not solve the GOP's minority problem, says Francis Wilkinson at Bloomberg:
For a little perspective, consider the votes of another minority — Asians. Romney won among all voters making more than $100,000 a year by a margin of 54-44. Asian-Americans happen to be the highest-earning group in the U.S., out-earning whites, and they generally place enormous emphasis on family. A perfect fit for Republicans, no?
No. Asians voted for Obama by 73-26; they were more Democratic than Hispanics.
Of course, Asians may have been just as disgusted as Latinos were by the GOP's immigration rhetoric. "The party's position on immigration is off-putting to many ethnic and racial groups," says Jennifer Rubin at The Washington Post, "because it reflects, they believe, a GOP that doesn't want them and doesn't want a diverse society.""

Republican-Heavy Counties Eat Up Most Food-Stamp Growth - Bloomberg

Republican-Heavy Counties Eat Up Most Food-Stamp Growth - Bloomberg: "Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney said in May that he’d written off votes from 47 percent of Americans who are collecting government aid. Turns out many of them are part of his political base.

Seventy percent of counties with the fastest-growth in food-stamp aid during the last four years voted for the Republican presidential candidate in 2008, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data compiled by Bloomberg. They include Republican strongholds like King County, Texas, which in 2008 backed Republican John McCain by 92.6 percent, his largest share in the nation; and fast-growing Douglas County, Colorado."

Virginia attorney general blocks innocent man's release: "But when relatives went to pick Montgomery up at the prison in Jarratt, they learned Attorney General Kenneth Cuccinelli's office had declared the order invalid because the judge lacked jurisdiction.

"This is a tragedy, and the attorney general is very concerned about it," Cuccinelli spokesman Brian Gottstein said in an email. "However, Virginia law will not allow the release.""

Top Republicans Suddenly Back Immigration Reform After Latinos Overwhelmingly Back Obama | ThinkProgress

Top Republicans Suddenly Back Immigration Reform After Latinos Overwhelmingly Back Obama | ThinkProgress:

  • House Speaker John Boehner (OH): Saying the issue has been around for far too long, Boehner said in an ABC interview that “I’m confident that the president, myself, others can find the common ground to take care of this issue once and for all.”
  • Former Gov. Haley Barbour (MS): Haley argued on the “Today” show that Republicans need to be in favor of good policy. “And good policy on immigration in the United States is, we are in a global battle for capital and labor, and we need to have what is good economic policy for America on immigration because we do need labor,” he said. “We not only need Ph.Ds in science and technology, we need skilled workers and we need unskilled workers. And we need to have an immigration policy that is good economic policy, and then — and then the politics will take care of itself.”
  • Radio host Sean Hannity: On his radio show Thursday, Hannity told his listeners that he has “evolved” on immigration policy and now supports a “pathway to citizenship.” The problem can’t go on, he added. “It’s simple to me to fix it,” Hannity said. “I think you control the border first. You create a pathway for those people that are here — you don’t say you’ve got to go home. And that is a position that I’ve evolved on. Because, you know what, it’s got to be resolved. The majority of people here, if some people have criminal records you can send them home, but if people are here, law-abiding, participating for years, their kids are born here, you know, first secure the border, pathway to citizenship, done.”

Obama Campaign Clawed Back After a Dismal Debate - NYTimes.com

Still absorbing, great story!
Obama Campaign Clawed Back After a Dismal Debate - NYTimes.com: "At least four planes were ready to go, and aides had bags packed for recount battles in narrowly divided states. Bob White, a close Romney friend and adviser, was prepared to tell the waiting crowd that Mr. Romney would not yet concede.

But then, Mr. Romney quietly decided it was over. “It’s not going to happen,” he said.

As Ann Romney cried softly, he headed down to deliver his speech, ending his second, and presumably last, bid for the White House. Four decades earlier, his father and inspiration, George Romney, a former Michigan governor failed in his own such quest."

Peacefully grant the State of Texas to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government. | We the People: Your Voice in Our Government: "The US continues to suffer economic difficulties stemming from the federal government's neglect to reform domestic and foreign spending. The citizens of the US suffer from blatant abuses of their rights such as the NDAA, the TSA, etc. Given that the state of Texas maintains a balanced budget and is the 15th largest economy in the world, it is practically feasible for Texas to withdraw from the union, and to do so would protect it's citizens' standard of living and re-secure their rights and liberties in accordance with the original ideas and beliefs of our founding fathers which are no longer being reflected by the federal government."

Obama’s bold push to win Latinos - Emily Schultheis and James Hohmann - POLITICO.com

Great article, mainly strategy!
As a note, republicans can change their luck with Latinos but it's uphill.  Democrats have sizably won the Latino vote three times: 2006, 2008, and 2012.  I as the rule goes once a person votes three times for a party they are likely to become lifetime voters of that party (Republican strategist on CNN, 06 Nov 2012; John Avalon's wife??).  With Julian Castro, and LA's Antonio V., a Marco Rubio is a small fish and dare i say a token-ish Cuban with a different value system; Cubans don't reflect the lives of mainstream Latinos.  Latinos vote for policies that work for their families: healthcare and education.  Unless Rubio supports education reform in public schools, and strong healthcare support positions he's in the position of being a Cuban republican.  Republicans have 2 Latino senator, and a few in the house, Democrats have 20 something in both chambers: see, the delegations of NJ ( Cuban senator), NY, CA, TX.

Obama’s bold push to win Latinos - Emily Schultheis and James Hohmann - POLITICO.com: "Mitt Romney’s devastating loss among Latino voters last Tuesday was even worse than many in his party had expected.

But the GOP nominee may not have had much of a chance to begin with."

Florida vote beyond recount range; Allen West won't concede - Associated Press - POLITICO.com

Let it go, West.  Just go to conservative radio, start a show and make money from conservatives officially - not through the guise of being a congressman.

Florida vote beyond recount range; Allen West won't concede - Associated Press - POLITICO.com: "Republican Rep. Allen West was defeated by Democratic challenger Patrick Murphy, according to the state's vote count Saturday, but the incumbent won't concede.

The state issued complete but unofficial results showing Murphy with a lead of 2,442 votes, or 50.4 percent. That's beyond the half-percent margin needed to trigger an automatic recount. A handful of overseas and military ballots remain outstanding, but under state law the decision for a recount is based on Saturday's count."

Two Maps Show The Outlook For Obamacare - Business Insider

Two Maps Show The Outlook For Obamacare - Business Insider: "To a large extent, the success of the health overhaul lies in how many of the nation’s uninsured get coverage. And that is largely in the hands of the states, which have been all over the map in their willingness to cooperate.
We mean that literally. The maps here show the lack of consensus on two key parts of the act: Creating insurance exchanges and expanding Medicaid.
Here’s why each map matters."

FL Election Results 2012: Barack Obama Defeats Mitt Romney

FL Election Results 2012: Barack Obama Defeats Mitt Romney: " President Barack Obama was declared the winner of Florida's 29 electoral votes Saturday, ending a four-day count with a razor-thin margin that narrowly avoided an automatic recount that would have brought back memories of 2000.

No matter the outcome, Obama had already clinched re-election and now has 332 electoral votes to Romney's 206."

The Florida Secretary of State's Office said that with almost 100 percent of the vote counted, Obama led Republican challenger Mitt Romney 50 percent to 49.1 percent, a difference of about 74,000 votes. That was over the half-percent margin where a computer recount would have been automatically ordered unless Romney had waived it.

What's wrong with these people??

Boehner & Romney Share Number Problem - Business Insider: "The Tax Policy Center will have to run the numbers, but Speaker Boehner’s formulation of resolving the fiscal cliff without allowing the upper income Bush tax cuts to expire may well suffer from the same bad math as Gov Romney’s allegedly revenue neutral tax cut.

That is, the Speaker is saying no to tax cuts (which puts him at odds with the election results, but never mind that for now) but yes to new revenues through broadening the tax base. "

Medicaid Expansion To Poorest Southerners Denied By Republicans

A conundrum for conservatives!
Medicaid Expansion To Poorest Southerners Denied By Republicans: "If you're poor and you live in the South, there's a good chance health care reform won't reach you. Intransigent Republican governors from Florida to Texas remain steadfastly resistant to President Barack Obama's plan to expand Medicaid to their neediest constituents.

The health care reform law Obama enacted in 2010 depends heavily on Medicaid, a joint federal-state health benefits program, to reach the goal of near-universal health care. If every state participated, 17 million uninsured people would gain coverage through Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program between 2014 and 2022, according to the Congressional Budget Office. The law extends Medicaid to anyone who earns up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level, which is $14,856 this year."
