After a two-hour floor debate, the House passed the DREAM Act along mostly partisan lines, 216 to 198, with 38 Democrats voting against the bill and eight Republicans supporting it."

King won't chair immigration panel

 

House leaders passed over anti-illegal immigration hardliner Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) for the chairmanship of an immigration panel on the Judiciary Committee Friday.

Judiciary Chairman Lamar Smith appointed Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Calif.) instead, a member of the subcommittee but less senior than King, who was the panel’s top Republican in the last Congress.

King is known for his anti-illegal immigration stances. The tea party favorite introduced a measure on the first day of the new Congress that would limit birthright citizenship. He’s a close friend of longtime illegal-immigration foe Tom Tancredo.

King was upbeat about the decision, saying he’ll accomplish his immigration agenda even without the subcommittee gavel.

Immigration Battle Shifts to States With Wave of Bills - NYTimes.com: "Legislative leaders in at least half a dozen states say they will propose bills similar to a controversial law to fight illegal immigration that was adopted by Arizona last spring, even though a federal court has suspended central provisions of that statute.

The efforts, led by Republicans, are part of a wave of state measures coming this year aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration.

Legislators have also announced measures to limit access to public colleges and other benefits for illegal immigrants and to punish employers who hire them.

Next week, at least five states plan to begin an unusual coordinated effort to cancel automatic United States citizenship for children born in this country to illegal immigrant parents."

The efforts, led by Republicans, are part of a wave of state measures coming this year aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration.

Republicans gained more than 690 seats in state legislatures nationwide in the November midterms, winning their strongest representation at the state level in more than 80 years.

Among the states expected to introduce bills similar to Arizona’s are Georgia, Mississippi, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and South Carolina.

Gov. Jan Brewer: No more debates

“We have cut the budget, we have balanced the budget and we are moving forward. We have done everything that we could possibly do,” Brewer said before an extended pause.

She then added: “We have ... did what was right for Arizona. I will tell you that we have really did the best that anyone could do.”

Brewer later walked out of the post-debate press conference when pressed on her refusal to retract an earlier claim — proven false — that decapitated bodies were showing up in Arizona’s deserts.
