Police pepper spraying and arresting students at UC Davis–video

University police tore down tents at UC Davis yesterday afternoon, arresting 8 students in the process, Xeni Jardin of Boing Boing reports.

At one point, to clear a path to reach students that they had already arrested, they pepper-sprayed a line of seated, quiet protesters.

This video, which shows the pepper-spraying, is going viral. This comment, from venture capitalist Chris Sacca, sums up what lots of people who watch it are thinking:

Seriously. Right now. Stop what you are doing, watch this video, and reflect on what it means to be American:

Here's the video. The pepper-spraying happens right at the beginning. More context and photos below.

Barbour won't denounce Confederate license plate

Barbour won't denounce Confederate license plate: "Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour said Tuesday he won't denounce a Southern heritage group's proposal for a state-issued license plate that would honor Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest, who was an early leader of the Ku Klux Klan.

Barbour is a potential 2012 Republican presidential candidate.

Questioned by reporters Tuesday after an energy speech in Jackson, Barbour said he doesn't think Mississippi legislators will approve the Forrest license plate proposed by the Mississippi Division of Sons of Confederate Veterans.

The group wants to sponsor a series of state-issued license plates over the next few years to mark the 150th anniversary of the Civil War - or in its words, the 'War Between the States.' The Forrest license plate would be slated for 2014."

Obama: Efforts to strengthen Native American communities progressing

Gale Three Feathers, left, and Mark Bruishead celebrate Congress's passage last month of the Crow Tribe Water Rights Settlement Act.

Leaders of 565 tribes were invited to the conference, the White House said.

Alaska Native tribal leaders are gathering Thursday in Washington for the Tribal Nation’s Conference with President Obama. Each of the country’s 565 federally recognized tribes was invited to send a representative.  This is the second time the Obama White House has hosted such an event – the first was one year ago.  And it’s the first administration to hold them on such a scale. Marvin Kelly, on the Emmonak Tribal Council, says he hopes this year

The president said his administration has tackled some of the largest issues faced by American Indian communities, helping to create infrastructure, eliminate bureaucratic barriers and boost public health on reservations, where tribal members face rates of diseases like tuberculosis at a far higher rate than the rest of the nation.

The Justice Department, he said, is working to reform the criminal justice system on reservations. The Tribal Law and Order Act, signed by the president in July, contains measures to help fight drug and alcohol abuse on reservations, gives authorities better access to databases and improves opportunities for at-risk Native American youth.

American Indians' history has been "too often marred by broken promises and grave injustices against the first Americans," Obama said. While he acknowledged that no words can undo the damage, he said his administration aims for action to match those words.

Updated - Syphilis Experiment Is Revealed, Prompting U.S. Apology to Guatemala - NYTimes.com

Syphilis Experiment Is Revealed, Prompting U.S. Apology to Guatemala - NYTimes.com: "From 1946 to 1948, American public health doctors deliberately infected nearly 700 Guatemalans — prison inmates, mental patients and soldiers — with venereal diseases in what was meant as an effort to test the effectiveness of penicillin.

American tax dollars, through the National Institutes of Health, even paid for syphilis-infected prostitutes to sleep with prisoners, since Guatemalan prisons allowed such visits. When the prostitutes did not succeed in infecting the men, some prisoners had the bacteria poured onto scrapes made on their penises, faces or arms, and in some cases it was injected by spinal puncture.

If the subjects contracted the disease, they were given antibiotics."
