ThinkProgress » Limbaugh Whips Boehner: ‘If I Were A Political Leader…I Would Defend Big Oil’: "LIMBAUGH: [Boehner] is open to the idea of reducing the so-called oil subsidies. and he used a phrase popularized by the left: “It’s about time the oil companies pay their fair share.” He’s open to them paying their fair share and open to the idea of reducing their subsidies when we need them the most. I understand the Republicans don’t want to get caught in the trap — they think it’s a trap — of having to defend Big Oil.[...]"

Yes, 47% of Households Owe No Taxes. Look Closer. - NYTimes.com: "So a much greater share of income is now concentrated at the top of distribution, while each dollar there is taxed less than it once was. It’s true that raising taxes on the rich alone can’t come close to solving the long-term budget problem. The deficit is simply too big. But if taxes are not increased for the wealthy, the country will be left with two options."

The 46 Year-Long Republican War On Medicare

But if Americans want to know why Republicans are so eager to kill Medicare, they should look to the party’s history with the popular program. Leading Republicans actually denounced the program as it was being designed, warning that it would take us down the road to totalitarianism or worse, and other leading Republicans were caught on record plotting to eliminate it after it was created:

- Ronald Reagan:  [1961]

- Barry Goldwater: [1964]

- George H.W. Bush:  [1964]

- Bob Dole:  [1965]

- Sen. Carl Curtis (NE):  [1965]

- Dick Armey: [1995]

- Newt Gingrich:  [1996]

- Rep. Jeb Hensarling (TX): [4/15/2011]

Drilling Deep in the Gulf of Mexico (from 2006) - New York Times

Drilling Deep in the Gulf of Mexico - New York Times: "Every 17 seconds, a small armada of ships trawling 130 miles from the Louisiana coast fire powerful air guns toward the bottom of the sea in a hunt for the next big oil discovery.

The Neptune and three other ships are on a three-month mission to map one of the most remote regions of the United States. The data they collect from the vibrations set off by the guns in the gulf’s deepest waters will help engineers form a picture of some of the world’s newest petroleum prospects."

Even in an era of budget cuts, these government programs won’t die - The Washington Post: "Also unchanged: a program that pays cotton and peanut farmers to store their bales and bushels in warehouses. The idea is to let farmers keep their crop off the market while prices are low. The federal government will still budget $2 million a year, despite criticism from Obama and before him George W. Bush."

CIA recipe for invisible ink among newly released WWI-era documents - The Washington Post: "Here’s the secret, according to one of the six oldest classified documents in possession of the Central Intelligence Agency:

“Mix 5 drams copper acetol arsenate. 3 ounces acetone and add 1 pint amyl alcohol (fusil-oil). Heat in water bath — steam rising will dissolve the sealing material of its mucilage, wax or oil.”

But there’s a warning for the intrepid spy: “Do not inhale fumes.”"

Raúl Castro Proposes Term Limits in Cuba - NYTimes.com

Raúl Castro Proposes Term Limits in Cuba - NYTimes.com: "For 52 years the Castro brothers have ruled Cuba. But if President Raúl Castro has his way, he may be out of the job as soon as 2013 and definitely by 2018, when he is 86.

Mr. Castro, in a speech on Saturday heralding a battery of changes intended to lift the island out of economic despair and stagnant thinking, proposed that politicians be limited to two five-year terms in an effort to rejuvenate a political system dominated by aging loyalists of the revolution. At the top are himself and Fidel Castro, 84, who permanently gave up presidential power in 2008 and last month announced that he was no longer head of the Communist Party, either."

In a Changing Cuba, Many Remain Skeptical - NYTimes.com

In a Changing Cuba, Many Remain Skeptical - NYTimes.com: "For months, Cubans have been treated to an uncharacteristically blunt assessment of their future by none other than their president, Raúl Castro.

They do not work hard enough and live too much off the state dole, he has said. The economy has been based on an unworkable math in which two plus two “equals six or eight,” as he put it in a speech on Saturday. And the leadership has failed to groom a young generation to take over, leaving the upper echelon of the party dominated by standard-bearers of the revolution who are as old as 87."

Executive Pay Soars in 2010 - NYTimes.com

Executive Pay Soars in 2010 - NYTimes.com: "HAPPY days are back — in the corner office, at least.

After shrinking during the 2008-9 recession, paychecks for top American executives are growing again — in many cases, significantly so.

Rarely has the view from the corner office seemed so at odds with the view from the street corner. At a time when millions of Americans are trying to hang on to homes and millions more are trying to hang on to jobs, the chief executives of major corporations like 3M, General Electric and Cisco Systems are making as much today as they were before the recession hit. Indeed, some are making even more."

Public Schools Recruit Tuition-Paying International Students To Boost Revenue

Public Schools Recruit Tuition-Paying International Students To Boost Revenue: "Northern Maine is 7,000 miles and a world away from China, but that's not stopping a school superintendent from recruiting Chinese students to attend public high school in this remote mill town.

Faced with declining enrollments and shrinking revenues, public school districts from Maine to California are seeking out students from overseas, particularly China, to attend their high schools. At least two public schools in Maine have 10 tuition-paying Chinese students in classes this year, and the superintendent in Millinocket is the latest to set his sights on China.

It's a growing trend: Other schools are doing the same in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Ohio, Virginia and Washington, according to a student recruitment agency in San Francisco."

Florida Koran Burning Kill U.N. Staff

Summer for the U.S. Forces to leave is starting to look reasonable.

Afghans chanted anti-American slogans during a demonstration to condemn the burning of a copy of the Muslim holy book by a U.S. pastor, in Mazar-i- Sharif on Friday.

Stirred up by a trio of angry mullahs who urged them to avenge the burning of a Koran at Florida church, thousands of protesters overran the compound of the United Nations in this northern Afghan city, killing at least 12 people, Afghan and United Nations officials said.

The dead included at least seven United Nations workers — five Nepalese guards and two Europeans, one of them a woman. None were Americans. Early reports, later denied by Afghan officials, said at least two of the dead had been beheaded.

The attack was the deadliest for the United Nations in Afghanistan since 11 people were killed in 2009, when Taliban suicide bombers invaded a guest house in Kabul, and it underscored the latent hostility toward the nine-year foreign presence here, even in a city long considered to be among the safest in Afghanistan — so safe that American troops no longer patrol here in any numbers.

Jobs!! Growth Suggests Resilience of U.S. Recovery

Jobs_Mar_PrivateJobs_Mar_total

The United States economy showed signs of kicking into gear in March, as the Labor Department reported Friday that it added 216,000 jobs and knocked the unemployment rate down another jot, to 8.8 percent.

As many corners of the global economy are storm-tossed, with oil prices rising and rumblings of a government shutdown in Washington, economists are watching carefully to see if there will be a cumulative effect on hiring. The answer, so far, appears to be no.

The private sector has added, on average, 188,000 jobs in each of the last three months. Manufacturing continued its unlikely — if still modest — revival in March, adding 17,000 jobs. Health care added 37,000 jobs in the month, and professional and business services added another 78,000, although about 37 percent of that came from increases in temporary help. It was the 13th straight month of private-sector job growth.

In all, the Bureau of Labor Statistics breaks the economy into 16 job sectors. The unemployment rate, while still perilously high in a few, has dropped in 13 of those since March 2010.
