Proposed Texas map a blow to GOP - Alex Isenstadt - POLITICO.com

Proposed Texas map a blow to GOP - Alex Isenstadt - POLITICO.com: "A federal court-proposed map positions Democrats to gain as many as three congressional seats in Texas, dealing a sharp blow to Republicans who had hoped the state would help solidify their new majority.

Under the plan, Democrats could capture three of the four new seats Texas is gaining in the current round of reapportionment, and would be positioned to compete against one of the state’s freshman Republicans, Rep. Quico Canseco, whose southwestern Texas district would become considerably less GOP-friendly."

EVERYONE REJECTS INCONVENIENT FACTS

http://www.onthemedia.org/popup_player/#

In 2010, Professor Daniel B. Klein wrote The Wall Street Journal Op-Ed about the results of a study that showed that liberals and progressives knew less than conservatives and libertarians about basic economic policy matters. A year later he did another study that revealed that conservatives and libertarians actually didn't know any more than liberals or progressives on those matters. Brooke speaks with Klein about why everyone fared so poorly.

Rick Perry's Texas gets plenty of money from the feds

The first rule of asking for extra federal dollars in Texas is to never make it seem like you are asking for extra federal dollars.

For Gov. Rick Perry, this is a tricky line to walk. Because as much as the Republican presidential candidate bashes the federal government in his campaign speeches, Texas gets a lot of money from the feds — and a lot of it is going to the health care system he insists Texas can handle on its own.

  • Pass legislation requiring a two-thirds Congressional majority to pass any tax increases
  • End life-time appointments of federal judges
  • Pass a Constitutional amendment setting 18-year terms for Supreme Court justices
  • Issue a moratorium on pending federal regulations
  • Eliminate the Department of Commerce, Department of Education, and Department of Energy
  • Overhaul the Department of Homeland Security and privatize airport security
  • Downsize the Environmental Protection Agency "so it no longer torments job creators or gives an official stamp to phony science."
  • Privatize Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
  • And of course, end federal funding of Planned Parenthood

Racial Pattern Found In Harris County, Texas Death Penalty Sentencing: Report

Racial Pattern Found In Harris County, Texas Death Penalty Sentencing: Report: "Of the last 13 men that have been sentenced to death in Harris County, 12 of them are black, according to an analysis of prison and prosecution records by the Houston Chronicle. The discovery has prompted some local lawyers to ask for an investigation and calls for more debate around the administration of capital punishment.

"The more the defendant looks like you the harder it is to kill him — human nature being what it is," said Robert Murrow, one of the county's capital defense attorneys. "It's something we have to be thinking about. It's an issue we never should get too far out of the front of our consciousness.

The role of race in death penalty sentencing became a major issue in the county when the U.S. Supreme Court halted the execution of Duane Buck, after reviewing the testimony of a psychologist who said during the trial that black people were more likely to commit violence. Buck's appeal of his pending execution was rejected last week. Although the inmate's supporters pleaded with Harris County District Attorney Patricia Lykos, she told The Chronicle she has not yet made a decision.""

Ohio Issue 2: Election Day Robocall Instructs Voters To Go To Polls Tomorrow

At 9:37 a.m. on Tuesday, a Service Employees International Union (SEIU) staffer in Ohio received a robocall message inaccurately telling voters the election was "tomorrow."

With the economy in a slump for nearly four years, corporate executives and conservative politicians have repeatedly invoked "uncertainty" as a major barrier to American job-creation. The Arizona hate-monger goes down!

Most coverage of Tuesday’s night’s recall of state Senate President Russell Pearce (R) in Mesa, Arizona has focused on the fact that Russell authored the state’s controversial immigration legislation.

Pearce was defeated by Republican Jerry Lewis, a charter school executive, in a Republican primary that many may see as a referendum on a harsh immigration law similar to the one signed by Gov. Jan Brewer (R) and challenged by the Obama administration in the courts.

Immigration was a factor in his defeat — in large part because the Mormon Church decided that it should be. But an ethics scandal and under-handed campaign tactics also played a role.
