No Papers, No Fear | On Point with Tom Ashbrook

No Papers, No Fear | On Point with Tom Ashbrook: "In 1961 black and white students got on a bus together to ride through the South in a daring and courageous protest of Jim Crow. Yesterday in Phoenix, a new group of Freedom Riders, undocumented Latinos boarded a bus to advocate for immigration reform.

They’re protesting what they claim is harassment at the hands of Maricopa Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Up next, On Point: Is this the Freedom Bus or the UndocuBus? The issue that could profoundly affect the election for president."

How’s Obama spending the Fourth? - Salon.com

How’s Obama spending the Fourth? - Salon.com:

Does the National Review have a corrections policy, or anything? Just asking, because this Corner post by Andrew C. McCarthy still claims that President Obama will be spending the Fourth of July in Paris, french-kissing socialists, when in fact that is not true.
Mr. McCarthy eventually conceded, on Twitter, that he got the story wrong, but the post itself has not been corrected. Then McCarthy added that it was “Not clear” whether “The One” will be in Paris on Independence Day, though of course it is very clear to anyone who can Google and read that Obama will be spending the Fourth in Washington, as hundreds of news articles over the last few days have detailed. Then he refused to correct the post until some silly liberal got a “sense of humor.” Haha, it’s very funny to just get things wrong because you can’t read, and then to pretend it was a joke, because you think everyone else is as dumb as you. Very funny joke, Andrew C. McCarthy. (Here’s my joke: Andrew McCarthy is going to spend the Fourth of July doing bath salts with Greek neo-Nazis, according to this news report that I am linking to.)

Boot Bachmann: "In a June 13 letter, Rep. Michele Bachmann falsely accused Huma Abedin, longtime aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and a dedicated public servant, of plotting against the U.S. Government with the Muslim Brotherhood.

Many Republicans have condemned these ugly and unfounded claims—Even Speaker Boehner called them “dangerous.” But what’s more dangerous is Rep. Bachmann keeping her seat on the House Intelligence Committee, where she has access to classified national security information.

We can all agree this paranoid bigotry has no place in driving our national security policy. Join us in denouncing Rep. Bachmann’s attacks and demanding that Speaker Boehner remove her from the House Intelligence Committee before her reckless politics hurt our national security"

Eight percent,” he said. “You spend eight percent of G.D.P. on health care. You’re a pretty healthy nation. We spend 18 percent of our G.D.P. on health care, 10 percentage points more. That gap, that 10 percent cost, compare that with the size of our military — our military which is 4 percent, 4 percent. Our gap with Israel is 10 points of G.D.P. We have to find ways — not just to provide health care to more people, but to find ways to fund and manage our health care costs.”"

Central Banks Move to Spur Economy on 3 Fronts - NYTimes.com:
WASHINGTON — Concerned about waning economic growth, central banks in Europe and China announced measures Thursday to increase borrowing and spending by businesses and consumers, a response that was all the more striking because it was uncoordinated.

Three major central banks announced policy changes in the space of an hour. China’s central bank unexpectedly cut regulated bank lending rates for the second time in four weeks. The European Central Bank cut its benchmark interest rate to 0.75 percent, the lowest level in its 14-year history. And the Bank of England announced it would expand its holdings of government bonds by about 15 percent.

Obama for America TV Ad: "Firms"

I really like this commercial.  (It’s similar to an idea I had.)  I think if the feedback on this commercial is positive we’ll see an updated version produced and released later.  Also, I believe Mitt commented on the Cayman accounts; a blurb with his voice in it would be extremely effective.

The reason why this commercial works is because of that singing to a Florida crowd.  There is nothing like someone torturing a patriotic song that irritates people – think Roseanne Barr and the National Anthem at that baseball game.  Although Gov. Mitt was ingratiating himself to the crowd it was out of tune and seemed as if he was being obsequious to the older I-4 crowd.

Mayor Emanuel on growing Chicago

Gun Crimes in Chicago

Chicago is in the grips of a deadly gang war. At least 275 people have been killed in the city so far this year and many more have been shot, many of them innocent bystanders to the gang violence. Among the latest victims were 12- and 13-year-old girls shot Tuesday night. They survived.

Sgt. Matt Little leads one of the teams in Chicago's Gang Enforcement Unit. There are about 200 such officers in the city-- versus 100,000 gang members.

"Almost all the violence we're seeing now is from the gangs," Little said. "When there's a shooting we'll respond to the shooting. We'll figure out where we believe the most likely area for retaliation is and we'll work that area trying to both prevent retaliation and possibly build a case on offenders."

U.S. added 80,000 jobs in June as economy struggles - The Washington Post: "During the first quarter of 2012, employers added an average of 226,000 jobs a month, the Labor Department said. But job creation slowed in the second quarter to an average of 75,000 a month — far below the level that is needed to make a dent in the unemployment rate.

The job market seemed to plateau on many fronts in June, as only professional and business services added significant new jobs, while manufacturing — a bright spot in the otherwise tepid recovery — added 11,000 positions. Health care added 13,000 jobs, while most other industries showed little change."

Mitt Romney: Individual Mandate 'Is A Tax'

MittFliponTaxes

Contradicting his own top campaign adviser, Mitt Romney on Wednesday declared that the individual mandate contained in President Barack Obama's health care law is, indeed, a tax and not a penalty against those who refuse to buy coverage

"I said that I agree with the [Supreme Court']s dissent, and the dissent made it very clear that they felt [the individual mandate] was unconstitutional," Romney said in a released clip of a CBS News interview. "But the dissent lost. It's in the minority. And now the Supreme Court has spoken. And while I agree with the dissent, that's taken over by the fact that the majority of the court said it's a tax, and therefore, it is a tax."
