Latest Headache for NCAA Inc: College Football Players Want to Unionize - Businessweek

This is way past due.  The long term health care cost should fall on those who profited from the players work-product.  Likewise, the players should have some type of say at the table.  Those players make a decision to place their bodies in danger for an education, once that four year period is over the impact still remains.  A longer view from the player is needed.  This is not to say that players should get paid, or that they are an university employee.  It is to say that a worker = profit.

By comparison, a player has to be in the NFL for only three years and then they are owed a lifetime of health care and a pension.

This is at least a discussion.

Latest Headache for NCAA Inc: College Football Players Want to Unionize - Businessweek: "The NCAA’s ideal of student-athletes who take the field purely for the love of sport came under fire from a new direction on Tuesday as football players at Northwestern University announced they want to form a union—and they’ve got the United Steelworkers behind them.

The newly formed College Athletes Players Association would be the first athlete-specific union in the history of college sports, our colleagues on the Bloomberg News sports-business desk report. The Steelworkers are paying the nascent association’s legal fees in applying to the National Labor Relations Board for recognition."

Cathy McMorris Rodgers' State Of Union Response - Business Insider

Awesome!

Cathy McMorris Rodgers' State Of Union Response - Business Insider: "McMorris Rodgers' address, which she delivered minutes after President Barack Obama finished speaking, was clear and straightforward. Throughout her speech, she added something of a personal, caring tone. There were no hiccups, no awkward pauses, no breaks for water.

"Our mission — not only as Republicans, but as Americans — is to once again to ensure that we are not bound by where we come from, but empowered by what we can become," she said.

And, notably, McMorris Rodgers found a way to avoid the blunders and mistakes that have marred past Republican responses in the Obama era. It has become enough of a trend to be called a "curse." "

Bob McDonnell Indicted On Corruption Charges - Business Insider

Bob McDonnell Indicted On Corruption Charges - Business Insider:
During a meeting with Williams in New York, Maureen McDonnell "asked for assistance in finding a designer dress" for Bob McDonnell's inauguration. Williams agreed to purchase a designer dress for Maureen McDonnell. She eventually declined, but not before she sent this email to a senior McDonnell staffer:
I need to talk to you about the Inaugural clothing budget. I need answers and Bob is screaming about the thousands I'm charging up in credit card debt. We are broke, have an unconscionable amount in credit card debt already, and this Inaugural is killing us!! I need answers and I need help, and I need to get this done.
Maureen McDonnell told Williams she would take a "rain check."
From there, the McDonnells took multiple gifts, favors, and loans, including:

Republicans Fault Dempsey on Benghazi - The Daily Beast

I don't know how I feel about this.

Republicans Fault Dempsey on Benghazi - The Daily Beast: "An addendum to a scathing report from the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence on Benghazi signed by six of seven Republicans on the committee singles out Dempsey for “failures in leadership.” Specifically, the six Republicans fault Dempsey for failing to have a plan to respond to an attack on Benghazi given the ample intelligence showing the desire of terrorists to attack Americans there, and for allowing General Carter Ham, who was the combatant commander for Africa Command, to not know the CIA maintained an annex in Benghazi near the U.S. temporary mission."

Ex-Cop’s Shooting of Texting Moviegoer Ends in Tragedy - The Daily Beast

Ex-Cop’s Shooting of Texting Moviegoer Ends in Tragedy - The Daily Beast: "After a retired Tampa cop fatally shot a texting moviegoer, his lawyer mounts a popcorn defense that raises the ugly specter of Stand Your Ground.
The attorney for the retired cop charged with shooting a Florida moviegoer who had been texting his three-year-old’s daycare provider spared his client from an uproar by not speaking the words Stand Your Ground.

But the legal argument that attorney Robert Escobar put forth on behalf of 71-year-old Curtis Reeves at Tuesday’s preliminary hearing in the Pasco County courthouse was the same as if he had uttered the name of the Florida law that says a person is justified in using deadly force if he or she reasonably believes they are in danger of death or great bodily harm."

Don’t Trust This Spy - NYTimes.com

Don’t Trust This Spy - NYTimes.com: "Jonathan Jay Pollard liked to imagine his life was greater than it was. He told fanciful tales to peers while at Stanford in the 1970s, including that he was a Mossad officer and that he had once been captured and tortured by Arabs.

After graduation, he lied to superiors and friends about his exploits and his qualifications. By the mid-1980s, he had used his position as a civilian naval intelligence analyst to become an enthusiastic and willing spy for profit by passing state secrets to Israel."

Colorado's legal recreational pot industry off to smoking start - U.S. News: "Colorado's legal recreational marijuana industry kicked off Wednesday with an Iraq war veteran who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder making the first pot purchase under the new law. Sean Azzariti of Denver, who helped campaign for Amendment 64, bought an eighth of an ounce of a strain called Bubba Kush and a pot-infused edible truffle for $59 at the 3D Cannabis Center — one of two dozen retailers that began selling up to an ounce of weed to adults starting at 8 a.m. mountain time. How Everyone Missed Gold's Big 2013 Plunge - Businessweek

How Everyone Missed Gold's Big 2013 Plunge - Businessweek: "Here’s a Bloomberg News headline that no one saw coming: “Gold Bulls Retrench as Price Drops Most in 32 Years.” One year ago, analysts surveyed by Bloomberg had a median price target of $1,815 an ounce for the end of 2013. Actual year-end price: around $1,200.

That is one huge miss. Not only did gold futures fall in 2013, but they fell 29 percent, the first yearly decline since 2000 and the biggest since 1981. Why were the forecasts so wrong? Mostly because gold prices are highly sensitive to the outlook for growth and inflation and the inscrutable moods of speculators. Guess wrong on those factors and you can be way off."

North Dakota Pitches Itself As a Utopia for Drones - Businessweek

North Dakota Pitches Itself As a Utopia for Drones - Businessweek: "The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration on Monday named six sites dedicated to the research and testing of unmanned aerial systems, or drones. Earlier this year, it received 25 proposals from 24 states looking to cash in on what could be a growing industry in the coming years, once the federal government has developed a legal framework for pilotless airplanes. Among those chosen to run a site was the Commerce Department of North Dakota, a state that has long seen aviation as a major driver of economic activity and has been increasingly focused on drones. Flush with tax revenues from an oil boom, the state government has been building the bones of a drone industry for years."
